*NEW RESEARCH* Windows 10 rollout underway

LogoThe rollout of Windows 10 started as planned on July 29. Microsoft is taking a cautious approach and phasing the rollout. This should mean it can prevent outages from high volumes of downloads and fix any problems before they proliferate too far and tarnish the new OS. After Windows 8, which pushed users too far, too fast, Microsoft is focussed on brand and reputation management. Due to the extensive beta programme the new capabilities of Windows 10 are well known and it has been well received so far – now the adoption test begins.

There is a lot resting on Windows 10: from Microsoft’s credibility in the mobile market, to changes in how it's monetising its offerings, and how it is positioning to build new revenue from the Internet of Things (IoT).

Subscribers can read our thoughts in our UKHotViewsExtra comment Windows 10 Unleashed. Those readers who are not yet TechMarketView subscribers can find out how to subscribe by emailing Deborah Seth.

*NEW RESEARCH* UK Business Process Services Supplier Landscape 2015

lLast year, the UK BPS supplier landscape was all about disruption impacting the status quo among the top 20 - exposing the decline of some really big name suppliers and the rise of some new names and star performers (see UK Business Process Services Supplier Landscape 2014).

This year that disruption is accelerating, with the real boost being to those players focused on hotter digital technology areas - notably Analytics, Business Process Automation (BPA) Business Process Platforms (BPPs), Business Process-as-a-Service (BPaaS) and Customer Experience (CX).

Accenture and Capita in particular are making headway into this new realm via aggressive acquisition strategies. Meanwhile in the public sector, a newer breed of competitor - notably arvato and Sopra Steria - are taking market share thanks to their responsiveness and pragmatic approach to service delivery.

Providers wedded to the old delivery models of lift and shift and legacy outsourced operations, focused predominantly on cost reduction, are the ones being disrupted. Providers like Xchanging and HP are investing in new technology and platform IP to turn things around, but it will take time, and there are no guarantees of success.

What makes this so significant is that the digital technologies like digital BPPs, BPA and BPaaS are not huge in revenue terms, but they impact a UK BPS market worth billions. And it is these newer tools which are directing the new BPS spend, and enabling new engagement with customers around digital transformation. Those suppliers that don’t have the relevant capability or partnerships in place, are seeing new business opportunities disappearing, and the consequent loss of market share when contracts are let.

This year, the UK BPS market is all about 'Digital Disruption'...

Subscribers to TechMarketView's BusinessProcessViews research stream can read the detailed analysis and implications for BPS suppliers in the new report: UK Business Process Services Supplier Landscape 2015.

*NEW RESEARCH* Mobile apps adoption in UK public sector

Report coverWith public sector bodies at varying stages in their digital transformation ‘journeys’, this latest PublicSectorViews report examines the extent to which mobile applications (apps) are part of the thinking. Public sector workers are spending increasing amounts of time working remotely, while citizens are often looking to engage with public sector bodies via mobile devices. Public sector bodies are faced with a variety of choices in how to support employees and citizens in an increasingly mobile age. Public sector organisations also face contradictory advice on the recommended use of mobile apps.

This PublicSectorViews report – Mobile apps adoption in UK public sector - identifies the areas in which mobile apps have been developed, implemented and used, and the suppliers involved. Subscribes to TechMarketViews’ PublicSectorViews research stream can download the report now. If you are not yet a subscriber, please contact Deb Seth, to find out how to sign up and gain access.

*NEW RESEARCH* ESAS Market Trends & Forecasts 2015

LogoDigital transformation is the great growth hope for the Enterprise Software & Application Services (ESAS) market but the reality of digital adoption is less fulsome than the market chatter suggests.

ESASViews subscribers can explore current and future trends and see where the most promising near term digital opportunities lie in  Enterprise Software & Application Services Market Trends and Forecast 2015, the latest report from the ESAS research stream. This core report also contains our market size and growth data.

The combination of market insight and market data make it essential reading for all ESAS suppliers operating in the UK market. Download the report here. If you do not have an ESASViews subscription, contact Deb Seth for details.

The digital playbook is all about smart operations. In our view, smart suppliers will play the long game and operate at the intersection between legacy and digital environments, prepared to sacrifice ’jam today’ for ’jam tomorrow’. But they also have to cope with the challenges of digital fragmentation and complex technology environments of multi-part joins and co-dependencies, all overlaid by cross department politics and budgets. All of which can conspire to push the digital transformation timeline to the right. Understanding and navigating these complexities is key to supplier success – and making revenue from the digital transformation opportunity.

*NEW RESEARCH* After the election: The next five years

On May 7th, the General Election 2015 took everyone by surprise: a majority Conservative Government took office. The initial reaction from the UK public sector SITS supplier community was relief. The appointment of a majority Government avoided weeks of uncertainty and potential delays in decisions around major Government projects.

We then heard of changes to the Cabinet. From our perspective the most interesting appointments were Matthew Hancock as Minister for the Cabinet Office in charge of efficiency and civil service reform (see Maude will be a tough act to follow) and Greg Clark as Minister for the Department for Communities and Local Government (see Cameron leaves Pickles on the sides).  Since then, we have also seen a shake-up in Whitehall. Most notably, John Manzoni, Chief Executive of the Civil Service, takes on additional responsibilities as Permanent Secretary at the Cabinet Office.

However, despite some certainty as a result of a majority Government, for UK public sector SITS suppliers, question marks remain.  Questions like:

· What will civil service reform look like and will ICT have a role to play?

· How will Government procure ICT services?

· Will more public services be outsourced? And how?

· What will be the role of the Government Digital Service?

· How will Government-as-a-Platform impact demand for ICT services?

· Will local government be increasingly influenced by Whitehall directives?

In this latest research note from the PublicSectorViews team we consider these burning questions, as we contemplate the future of digital in the UK public sector. Subscribers to PublicSectorViews can download the research - After the election: The next five years - now. If you are not yet a subscriber, please contact Deb Seth to find out more.

*NEW RESEARCH* Atos: Investing in big data & analytics

Tom Swanson - Atos, Chief Digital OfficerAtos logoMany companies are launching initiatives to exploit big data & analytics opportunities. However, the investment required by any company to embark on a Big Data or Analytics project - in infrastructure, skilled data scientists and software - is often very significant. At the same time, the realisable benefits from one particular use case, marketing initiative or potential operational improvement are usually insufficient to generate a positive return. Too often the projects are aimed at a tactical objective, rather than aimed at fundamentally improving the strategic positioning of a company.

Since April of this year, Atos has been quietly marketing the first fruits of a year-long joint project to develop an approach to “industrial strength” data analytics that addresses these underlying problems. Recently, TechMarketView met with the Atos team responsible for developing the company’s approach to “industrial-strength” big data & analytics. Atos representatives included Ursula Morgenstern (then UK&I CEO), Tom Swanson (Chief Digital Officer, pictured); and Andrew Stevenson (Director of Big Data & Analytics, Canopy). In this CompanyViews research note – Atos: Investing in big data & analytics - we assess Atos’ approach in the context of market developments and the competitive environment. New Financials Services Research: Taking the Initiative: The Supplier Perspective

picThe Financial Services sector is undergoing substantial change, as discussed in the recently published report entitled “Taking the Initiative: Leading with Technology in Financial Services”, co-authored by techUK and TechMarketView.

We have expanded the themes discussed in the techUK report and in Taking the Initiative: The Supplier Perspective (available through this link) we examine the key implications of these changes for the UK Software and IT Services supplier community. Here, FinancialServicesViews considers the questions as to whether the faster dynamic in some parts of the financial services sector towards rationalisation and growth will result in higher external spend and whether the customers’ attitude towards suppliers, partnerships and utilities will change. We also ask if the financial services sector incumbents are moving fast enough in the face of increasing competition, and what suppliers need to do about it. We also discuss how major purchasers such as RBS and HSBC are reacting to the pressures on them to change and how this will affect their relationship with suppliers.

This report should provide useful advice for companies active in the most dynamic vertical in terms of Software and IT Services and where new and increasing demands are being placed on both Financial Services providers and their key technology suppliers. If you don’t already subscribe to this research stream, please contact Deb Seth of our Client Services team.

*NEW RESEARCH*: Opportunities in mobile micro moments

ImageWith so much business and consumer activity switching to mobile devices the battle for the hearts, minds and fingers of mobile users is frenetic. Where there is frenzy, there is radical change and the emergence of mobile micro moments is the latest proof point.

The mobile environment is at the sharp end of changes in user behaviour and how individuals consume data to make decisions. One of the effects of these changes is the emergence of mobile micro moments. These are bursts of activity driven by an immediate need, question, or simple curiosity that occur multiple times a day and can be over in a matter of seconds. They are the epitome of ‘I want something, and I want it now’ urges, with users fulfilling them by reaching for their nearest mobile device. For UK SITS providers they present both hard challenges and fresh revenue opportunities but the level of complexity means the benefits will be hard won.

The latest research from the ESASViews stream - Spotting the Opportunities in Mobile Micro Moments  - delves into this emerging area, examining the challenges, opportunities, key technologies and providers in the market. Eligible subscribers can download the report here. If you don’t have an ESASViews subscription, contact Deborah Seth who will be happy to advise on how to access this service.

*NEW RESEARCH* Trustmarque's services ambitions post Liberata takeover

lLiberata, the public sector-focused business process services (BPS) provider, made a bold move to acquire troubled software reseller and services provider Trustmarque last September, with the backing of PE owner Endless LLP (see here).

lTrustmarque operates as a separate entity today under the existing management, led by CEO Scott Haddow and sales & marketing director Angelo Di Ventura, who we met recently for an update on how business has progressed.

This was not the obvious match for Liberata. But it more than doubled the size of its business, bringing together two companies with combined revenue of c£240m – in software reselling, infrastructure services and BPS.

Trustmarque has made progress under its new owner Liberata. However the challenge will be capitalising on the cross-selling potential as they remain two separate companies.

Subscribers to TechMarketView’s Foundation Service and BusinessProcessViews research streams can read the analysis here: Trustmarque’s services ambitions post Liberata/Endless takeover

*NEW Research*: Public Sector Opportunities Bulletin July 2015

Opportunities Bulletin front coverSubscribers to TechMarketView's PublicSectorViews' research stream, can now download the 4th edition of our recently launched Public Sector Opportunities Bulletin. The latest bulletin focuses on SITS supplier opportunities in the health, local government and police sectors. They represent developments that we have picked up in our everyday research and we think are interesting, not just from the perspective of the specific opportunity, but because there are potentially broader implications for the market and its suppliers.

In this edition, we look at the Metropolitan Police Service's search for an integrated operational policing system; at Ireland's plan for a 5-year investment in e-Health; at the Transport for London's network Tower procurement; and at attempts by the Scottish Government to consolidate its datacentre estate. If you are a PublicSectorViews subscriber, you can download the bulletin now, otherwise please contact Deb Seth to find out more.
