Angels praise Disciple Media with more dosh for community platform

logoI assume it was not ‘a momentary lapse of reason’ that prompted Pink Floyd drummer, Nick Mason, to back London-based community portal development platform, Disciple Media. Mason was one of several prior investors in the startup leading a $6m Series A funding round. Founded in 2013, but only launched in 2018, Disciple previously raised seed funding in August 2020 (Source: CrunchBase).

Community platforms are ‘big thing’. This month alone I have written about two: Oxford-based community portal, Bimble, whose founder I will speaking to later today (see Angels find Bimble a great little place to sprinkle more dosh), and over-50’s community portal Rest Less (see Over-50’s community portal Rest Less restless for growth funding).

But Disciple is, of course, not alone. Among the very many others, there’s London-based Zapito, which morphed from a ‘content management system on a mission’ to community software platform (see Zapnito zaps more dosh for community sharing). Unfortunately, Zapito is a rather coy about pricing, whereas Disciple has it out there for all to see, starting at $55 p.m. (damn, yet another UK startup billing in dollars) but an humungous $549 p.m. for the mobile app. Disciple claims over 500 ‘thriving passion communities’ around the world earning ‘millions in revenue each year’ from their nearly 2m members.

I have no idea how many community groups there are in the universe, but it must be orders of magnitude greater than those already ‘platformed’ by the likes of Disciple and Zapito. If so, that suggests there is plenty of room in the market for them all to grow if they can catch community leaders' attention. That will rely as much on product differentiation as it will on a massive marketing budget.
