CGI to develop wildfire mapping service

CGI has sCGI logoigned another contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). It will develop a new AI-enabled wildfire mapping service to map and monitor wildfires. The solution will draw on recent advances in Earth Observation (EO), artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.

CGI will work with its partner, University of Leicester, to implement and demonstrate EO services based on the requirements of nationally mandated user organisations – Geoscience Australia and ONF France. This will require the evaluation of a variety of AI algorithms and their machine learning (ML) capabilities. By combining the algorithms with frequent high-quality satellite observations, the aim is to allow better burnt area mapping products to be generated where and when users want them.

The mapping service will be made available to the wider environmental community through the cloud-based EO4SD Lab Portal, which has been developed by CGI for ESA to provide free access to a range of EO data, tools, and services.

CGI has an ongoing partnership with ESA for EO and Thematic Exploitation Platforms to enable rapid progress in monitoring the Earth’s environment to support scientific research and government policy. This latest contract builds further on the company’s decades of experience in delivering complex mission critical space software systems. Moreover, involvement in projects like this one – that demonstrate the ability of technology to support urgent environmental causes -  are a fantastic for attracting fresh talent into the business.
