Vodafone’s analyst summit earlier this month saw new CEO Nick Read and other executives put the emphasis firmly on the mobile operator’s fastest growing business segment – the Internet of Things (IoT).
That may be because the performance of the rest of the company’s portfolio has been less than impressive recently – its latest annual results were decidedly mixed, particularly for the UK. Turnover from Vodafone’s core fixed and mobile voice and data services have been negatively impacted by plummeting prices due to intense competition and regulatory pressure on the telecommunications market, while large scale investment in network infrastructure expansion has weighed heavily on its profits.
No surprise then that Vodafone was happier to demonstrate that it is successfully building on its machine to machine (M2M) connectivity customer base and broadening its IoT capabilities, while also using IoT as a segue to additional service upselling around cloud hosting and analytics.
