TechMarketView launches IndustryViews Quoted Sector

We are proud to announce the launch the fourth major research stream in the TechMarketViewViews” series, IndustryViews: Quoted Sector (IVQS). In the inaugural edition, available now to TechMarketView subscription service clients, you will see the first of our quarterly reviews of the UK software and IT services (SITS) quoted sector. Not only do we analyse the performance over the quarter, but we look at longer term trends over 12, 36 and 60 months. And, uniquely to TechMarketView, we set this in context of the sector going back to when we started tracking the market in the late ‘80s.

In IVQS we also look at each of the significant subsectors: software, IT services, BPO and ITSAs (IT staff agencies). Although BPO players and ITSAs are classed in the FTSE Support Services index, the fortunes of many of them - like Capita, Xchanging, Spring, Harvey Nash, and many more, are intimately tied to the prospects of the ‘traditional’ IT services marketplace. Also uniquely, we compare the performance of the UK quoted IT services sector with benchmark players in Europe - such as Atos Origin, Steria, Sopra and Capgemini - and those in the US, like Accenture, IBM, HP, CSC and Cognizant.

IVQS will be followed by sister publications IndustryViews: M&A (IVMA) and IndustryViews: Private Equity (IVPE), which basically ‘do what they say on the tin’! Our aim is to bring you the most complete assessment of UK SITS industry dynamics, investor sentiment and valuations that you are likely to find, based on our many, many years of tracking the marketplace. Also watch out next month for CompanyViews, the authoritative rankings of the leading players in the UK software and IT services marketplace.

Don’t forget you can find our deeper analysis of the Tech Mahindra/Satyam deal in our latest OffshoreViews note also in the Research section on the TechMarketView website. Our next OffshoreViews note will take a look at Indian BPO pure-play - and ex-British Airways captive - WNS. WNS hit the headlines last July winning a $1bn BPO contract with UK insurer, Aviva. Yes, another India-based player is after your lunch.

All the “Views” research programmes are exclusively available to TechMarketView subscription service clients. If you want to join those ‘in the know’ and get access to IndustryViews, OffshoreViews, CompanyViews, MarketViews, AnalystViews and of course the UKHotViews archive, please drop Puni Rajah a line at prajah@techmarketview.com.

New research from TechMarketView

As trailed last week (see HP-EDS India still a ‘game of two halves’) we have just published our latest OffshoreViews note with a deeper analysis of HP’s India-based offshore operations. TechMarketView subscription service clients can download it here.

And watch out for the launch issue of IndustryViews: Quoted Sector (IVQS), which will bring you our quarterly analysis of the UK software and IT services (SITS) quoted sector. IVQS will be followed by sister publications IndustryViews: M&A (IVMA) and IndustryViews: Private Equity (IVPE), which basically ‘do what they say on the tin’! Our aim is to bring you the most complete assessment of UK SITS industry dynamics, investor sentiment and valuations that you are likely to find in the marketplace.

But there’s more! Also next month we will publish CompanyViews, the authoritative rankings of the leading players in the UK software and IT services marketplace. We are currently ploughing through a mountain of company results to make sure our rankings are bang up to date. There’s sure to be lots of surprises and of course we’ll be giving you our opinion on the prospects of each of the ranked players in the UK market.

If you want to join those ‘in the know’ and get access to OffshoreViews, IndustryViews, CompanyViews, MarketViews, AnalystViews and of course the UKHotViews archive, please drop Puni Rajah a line at prajah@techmarketview.com.

HP-EDS India still a ‘game of two halves’

(By Anthony Miller - Tuesday, 7th April 2009 8:45am). I have just come off the phone to Susanto Banerjee, the CFO of Mphasis, the Bangalore-based SI some 61% owned by EDS. It’s clear to me that until HP makes up its mind what it’s going to do with Mphasis’ remaining shareholders (as in 'buy them out'), it will miss out on significant synergies between its own India-based workforce (apparently 15,000-18,000 strong) and Mphasis’ near-30,000. Together they would create an offshore ‘player’ similar in size to HCL or Satyam, which would surely strengthen the HP/EDS offshore services proposition. TechMarketView subscriber clients will be able to read more in a new OffshoreViews note due out in the next few days.

New from TechMarketView

We had a pretty busy week adding new research and opinion to the http://www.techmarketview.com/ site for our subscribers.

We added three AnalystViews, the first two covering the conclusions resulting from our major study of Cloud Computing and how it will affect the UK SITS market.

#1 Peering behind the Cloud sets the scene. Covering the kind of services which will be offered - from data centres, through services to software to the type of players we think can participate in the Cloud space.
#2 Cloud and the UK SITS market presents our latest trends and forecasts for Cloud and the UK software sector. Our forecasts anticipate that Cloud will be responsible for over 70% of the growth in the UK SITS sector in the next four years. By 2012, Cloud will represent 15% of the UK Software market and a massive 41% of the Business Application Software market. This is really hot stuff!

Indeed we conclude the report "Just like with the internet and e-business in the 1990s, it is possible to dismiss the Cloud as a passing fad. But your customers will not! Ignoring the Cloud will sentence your company to a lingering death as the source of new revenues from new customers disappears while your established customers migrate to Cloud offerings from new suppliers. So whether you like it or not, you have to plan your own Cloud offerings now."

The third AnalystViews covered the new structure and business model for Fujitsu outside Japan under Richard Christou. This has created much interest in whether the ‘solutions-led' or 'services-led' business model is best suited to today’s requirements. Our fairly hard hitting AnalystViews basically decided that the ‘one size fits all’ approach wouldn’t work. But Fujitsu’s new Global Marketing Director - Philip Oliver - assured us that it would still be the right ‘horses for courses’ at Fujitsu.

This research (together with MarketViews and OffshoreViews already published) is only available to subscribers. We will be adding CompanyViews and IndustryViews in the near future. To become a subscriber email us on sales@techmarketview.com.

TechMarketView goes Cloud spotting

When we were plummeting down the depths of the post Y2K downturn in the early 2000’s, the IT industry bemoaned the fact that there was no ‘next big thing’ on the horizon to shake the market out of its stupor.

There is now, and it’s called Cloud Computing.

Very much like our forecasts in the early ‘90s, we (then as Richard Holway Ltd) were ahead of our time predicting the impact the internet would have on the marketplace. We gave our first predictions for Cloud back in 1996 (except it was then called ASP). Although we will be the first to admit that we got the timescale wrong for the growth in Cloud computing, we would defend the trend-line we forecast at that time and the ultimate destination.

Worryingly, too many players - especially in the software industry - are still sticking their heads in the sand! Why should we all worry? Because we believe that the majority - indeed over 70% - of the absolute growth in the UK SITS market between 2009 and 2012 will be attributable to Cloud. That’s why!

So today we are delighted to bring you not one but two new pieces of research on Cloud Computing, in our AnalystViews series. Cloud and the UK SITS market presents our latest trends and forecasts for Cloud and the UK software sector. Peering behind the Cloud sets the scene for the type of players we think can participate in the Cloud space (so to speak).
