Did you miss something?

TMV logoThe tail end of 2013 saw a flurry of activity from the TechMarketView research team with the publication of a number of must-read reports. Here’s a reminder of some of the highlights in case you were too busy with festivities to put your glass down and pick up a report in December:

Financial Services SITS Supplier Landscape 2013/4

FinancialServicesViews Research Director Peter Roe’s analysis of the UK SITS financial services supplier landscape is a must-read for anyone with an interest in the sector. Peter predicts substantial opportunities for successful vendors to grow at the expense of their competitors in what promises to be a very dynamic market in 2014.

Local Government SITS Supplier Landscape 2013/4

PublicSectorViews subscribers can read our latest analysis of the UK SITS Local Government market and suppliers in this report, including those all important supplier rankings. Our analysis highlights continued changes in buying behaviour and supplier strategies which have already changed the market pecking order and which we expect to continue to affect the leader board in future years.

Visual Data Discovery: cracking the ‘pervasive insight’ nut

Subscribers to our Enterprise Software and Application Services research stream (ESASViews) have a treat in store in Angela Eager’s latest report, which examines the emerging ‘visual first’ concept. Revenue from visual data discovery is low, but we see this as an important technology from a strategic perspective. ESAS providers have the opportunity to grow revenue by establishing more touch points within organisations and playing to businesses’ innovation agendas by making more use of existing data.

How are BPS suppliers responding to the rise of BPM?

BusinessProcessViews subscribers should be sure to read John O’Brien’s latest research on business process management, which is seeing an increase in adoption in the UK BPS market. IT/BPS providers like IBMAccentureCognizantWipro and TCS are actively delivering BPM software and services as part of consultative engagements with their customers, often leading on to broader change programmes.

Little British Battlers – The Third Wave

Foundation Service subscribers can read our opinion on the latest group of ‘Little British Battlers’ (LBBs) in this report. Each company is in its own way punching above its weight in its chosen markets and may present interesting partnering opportunities for larger players.

Highest UK SITS M&A activity for 7 years

imageThere was a strong increase in UK software and IT services (SITS) merger and acquisition activity in 2013 to the highest level for seven years.

According to data from corporate finance firm, Regent Partners, M&A activity had been steadily decreasing as 2012 progressed but 2013 started well and improved throughout the year. The third quarter was particularly strong, resulting in a very good second half. There were 340 buy-side and 382 sell side transactions involving UK SITS companies in 2013, up 18% and 13% respectively over 2012.

Eligible TechMarketView subscription service clients can read our concise analysis of UK software and IT services M&A activity in 2013 by downloading the latest edition of IndustryViews Corporate Activity.

TechMarketView In The Press

TMV logo

2014 has got off to a flying start here at TechMarketView with our analysts being regularly called upon to provide their expert opinion by the media (as well as clients!). The last quarter of 2013 was also a particularly busy time for the team with the launch of our latest research stream, FinancialServicesViews generating a lot of media coverage. Here’s just some of what the press had to say:

Already this year TechMarketView chairman Richard Holway has been quoted for his opinion on Google’s acquisition of Nest in The Telegraph article What is Nest and why has Google bought it?. Richard also proffers his thoughts on Windows 8 in The Times article Microsoft on the threshold of deleting ‘appalling’ Windows 8. Elsewhere in The Times Richard was quoted on social platforms in Investors line up for a taste of Twitter – minus the spam and on the latest Apple acquisition in Apple buys 3D sensing company PrimeSense for $350m. In the Financial Times article Aim-quoted tech group chiefs fall behind in remuneration race, Richard talks on UK technology entrepreneurs. While in The Independent Richard gives his views on BlackBerry’s fortunes in BlackBerry looks East to revive its fortunes after posting huge loss.

Also in the Financial Times BusinessProcessViews research director, John O’Brien’s analysis of the Innovation Group is covered in Innovation Group hopes to ride wave of telematics interest; our software and application services expert, Angela Eager, shares her views on Big Data in Fusionex profits rise shows appeal of big data; and PublicSectorViews director Tola Sargeant analyses Servelec’s healthcare prospects in Servelec IPO is UK’s biggest tech float in three years.

FinancialServiesViews research director, Peter Roe, is also already being quoted widely. Peter is, for example, quoted in Forbes on JP Morgan, Deutsche: Bank Instant Messaging Headache Gets Worse; in the Financial Times in Sage shares climb as shift to cloud and mobile gains pace and in ComputerWorldUK in Banks bet on cloud as IT budgets ease, report claims for his key Market Trends and Forecasts 2013/2014 report. Clearly the financial services sector is a market worth watching!

But perhaps the funniest quote at the tail end of 2013 was Richard’s in The Times on Sony’s hair raising SmartWig in Toupee or not? Sony answers the question. News of Sony’s patent for the SmartWig was also picked up by the VoiceOfRussia, in which Richard gave an interview on the subject: Japanese unveil 'wig-fi' - portable, wearable technology.

Of course there has been plenty of coverage of the TechMarketView team in the trade press too – too much to mention it all here. And with the hotly anticipated Predictions report published last week and a packed research agenda for the year ahead, look out for further comment from the TechMarketView team in 2014!

Egress Software secures rapid growth

Egress Software logoJust before Christmas, we had an in-depth chat with CEO of Egress Software Technologies. Though not officially one of our Little British Battlers (see Little British Battlers – the Third Wave), the company has all the ingredients to be classed as one.

Established in 2007, the UK HQ’ed SME is a provider of email and file encryption software. In its last financial year (to end December 2013) Egress achieved growth of 30% in revenues to £2.2m. And it is targeting even stronger growth for the current year. A large percentage of this growth is down to its success in the UK public sector, where Egress derives the majority of its revenues.

TechMarketView subscribers can learn more about Egress’ recent success and its prospects for future growth in UKHotViewsExtra: Egress Software secures rapid growth. If you are not yet a subscriber and you would like to benefit from this and other research and analysis from TechMarketView, please contact Deb Seth.

New ESAS Research: Visual Data Discovery

GraphicWe are familiar with the concepts of ‘cloud first’ and ‘mobile first’, now ‘visual first’ is emerging. This describes the new wave of BI and analytics tools from the likes of QlikTech, Tableau and Tibco’s Spotfire that aim to put ad hoc data query and analysis directly into the hands of business users in a form that is easy to use and produces output that can be readily understood and interacted with. These tools address some of the barriers to mainstream BI and analytics adoption (e.g. cost, usability, static reports, the need for expert skills) but they also have the potential to prise open emerging markets such as the big data analytics market which needs a catalyst to accelerate movement.

Although revenue from visual data discovery is low, we see this as an important technology from a strategic perspective, with opportunities for ESAS providers to grow revenue streams by establishing more touch points within organisations and playing to businesses innovation agenda’s around the need to make more use of existing data. It also has the potential to open up the mid-market, which has a desire to invest in BI and analytics but limited resources. Subscribers to the ESASViews research stream can read our thoughts on this market in Visual Data Discovery: cracking the ‘pervasive insight’ nut here. Or you can contact Deborah Seth to find out how to subscribe.
