*NEW RESEARCH* Lawtech Adoption

Last year The Law Society commissioned TechMarketView to undertake a major review of the UK’s lawtech market, looking at barriers and drivers to adoption, the maturity of the market by legal segment and the implications for the future of the law. Now that The Law Society has published the research, we can share the outputs with UKHotViews readers. 

lawtech researchLawtech has seen a huge amount of start-up activity in the UK in recent years with law firms under increasing pressure to embrace new technologies but it remains less mature than other fields of digital disruption (such as Fintech) where there is more funding and regulatory alignment. Significant barriers to adoption still remain and different segments of the legal market are at very different stages of maturity and focused on adopting different technologies. 

The research explores what types of lawtech providers are gaining most traction in different sectors of the profession and the drivers behind this, with a view to how adoption rates might impact the future shape of legal process and delivery.

WCIT Outstanding Tech Student Awards 2019

Today I attended the 103rd WCIT Business Lunch at Wax Chandlers Hall.

StudentThe occasion was to present the Outstanding Student Award for 2019. Alderman & Sheriff Vincent Keaveny gave the award to Rachel Lee Mekhtleva who got a 1st in Maths and Computer Sciences at Imperial. This is a young lady who is seriously going places! She was offered a job at Facebook but wants to do a PhD instead. All I can say is that Sheryl Sandberg better watch her job...

What was even more interesting was that the other 4 ‘runners up’ were all female. Yes, that’s right all 5 finalists in a tech related student competition were female. Rachel was asked why, despite this, the industry is still overwhelmingly male? She gave the most brilliant answer which EAchastised the current ambassadors of Computer science in schools for making computing look nerdish whereas it was full of creativity, design, understanding people’s needs etc. Things, she said, that tend to attract young people with a creative mindset, including more young girls.

Then our friend John O’Connell from ScaleUp Group presented the WCIT Master Lady Parmley with a cheque for £10,000 raised at last year’s Enterprise Awards Dinner.

*NEW RESEARCH* The Expanding Influence of Babylon

Babylon logoNHS England has given permission for Babylon’s GP at Hand service to extend outside of London for the first time. It had previously advised against expansion due to concerns about access to local clinical pathways and screening services. NHS Hammersmith and Fulham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), where GP at Hand is based, and Birmingham and Solihull CCG will now work together to agree when the service will start operating in Birmingham.

Report Cover ImageUse of Babylon’s GP at Hand app, which provides a symptoms checker, appointment booking and online consultation service, has grown rapidly since its introduction. It has been a controversial success story though, because when patients sign up for the service they deregister from their existing GP practice and the NHS funding for that patient goes with them. This is leading to concerns about a two-tier system developing where the younger and fitter patients are cherry picked from their previous practice.

Babylon has long wanted to expand the GP at Hand service outside of London, but, until now, had been blocked by Hammersmith and Fulham CCG and NHS England. The restrictions on expansion into Birmingham have now been removed and GP at Hand looks set to add patients from the city to its service shortly.

In this report we look at the history of GP at Hand, the impact of its expansion, the company behind the technology and concerns about how that company has been championed by the Government.

AtosAs the market continues to pivot away from contracts that simply involve “keeping the lights on”, Atos has enjoyed a number of recent successes in the financial services outsourcing space. Although cost and efficiency remain part of the mix, financial services firms have grown to realise the importance of customer advocacy in growing their business. I visited Atos recently to meet with Chris Darlington, head of UK financial services, to talk about the market and learn more about the Atos approach.

In addition to the technology and business process improvements that Atos has been able to bring to some of its HVPengagements, Chris spoke passionately of the importance of the cultural changes that Atos aims to leverage. He explained that a “fail fast” DevOps type approach was helping the firm to realise rapid improvements for its clients, whilst also empowering team members. Atos logoAtos made two significant moves in 2018. The first, the acquisition by Atos Worldline of SIX Payment Services, came in May (see Worldline scores SIX to build lead in European payments), reinforcing Worldline’s position as the largest payments business in Europe. The second came in in July. It was the acquisition of Syntel – see All eyes on Atos North America – which made North America Atos’ largest geography, brought increased capabilities in banking, finance and insurance, and boosted the company’s offshore resources, particularly in digital.

Having changed the size and business mix of Atos, the influence of these two acquisitions was clear to see in the main announcements from the company’s Investor Day last week. There were three key reveals: 1) the deconsolidation of Atos Worldline, 2) the three-year plan (ADVANCE 2021) and 3) a first look at the FY18 performance.

Share Indices in Jan 19

Jan 19 was a pretty good month for shares - tech in particular. NASDAQ rose by 10% but is STILL down nearly 10% from its high at the end of Sept 18. FTSE100 started 2019 with a 3.6% gain but is also STILL down over 9% from its Aug 18 highs.

HVPThe FTSE SCS Index - which most closely maps the UK SITS stocks we follow - rose 4% in Jan. A decent enough start to the year but still down a massive 34% from mid Jan 18. Those were the days before the big falls in Sage and Micro Focus.
