*RANKINGS LAUNCHED*: TCS becomes UK’s second largest SITS supplier

Today, TechMarketView launches its unique annual review of Software and IT Service providers to the UK market.

The much anticipated, and highly comprehensive, Supplier Rankings report is available for our Foundation Service clients here: UK SITS Supplier Rankings 2020.

The report contains our Top 60 ranking of suppliers, which has been compiled following detailed research into over 200 publicly quoted and privately held companies.

tease

Holding on to its number one spot is Capita, in spite of a notable revenue decline in 2019. However, powering into second place is TCS, thanks to mega deal wins - many of which have been in Banking and Financial Services.  In recent years, the UK has become one of TCS’s largest and most important markets.

The rankings reflect the changes in the market, and in particular how the long-standing suppliers are managing the swing from heritage Software and IT/Business Process Services to new propositions. Of note this year is the degree of M&A that is shaping the competitive landscape; both acquisitions and divestments feature as players re-shape themselves to thrive.

The march to cloud has seen impressive performances from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, but credit is due to a whole raft of other players (such as HCLPwCAccentureCognizant and Infosys) for progress during their most recently completed financial years.

The report profiles each of the Top 30 suppliers, alongside analysis of the movement and performance of the Top 60 players. Top 20 ranking tables are also provided for key horizontal market areas as defined by TechMarketView’s Digital Evolution Model (DEM): Enterprise Software, Consulting, Solutions, and Operations (across Business Process, Applications and Infrastructure) giving readers unparalleled depth and breadth of analysis.

2020 of course looks very different to 2019 in light of the pandemic, and TechMarketView continues to closely track and analyse the corporate and financial performance of the tech industry.

Read UK SITS Supplier Rankings 2020 in conjunction with TechMarketView’s Market Trends & Forecasts report (out soon) for a complete – and unrivalled – picture of the UK tech scene.

*UKHotviewsExtra* Wirecard collapse hits UK fintechs

WirecardThe collapse of German payments provider, Wirecard, has had a major impact on the UK fintech ecosystem. The firm’s sudden bankruptcy and the arrest of its CEO amid fraud allegations, have resulted in the services of a number of prominent providers being crippled.

Without notice, UK regulator the FCA, has suspended Wirecard's UK operations. The action was taken to prevent assets from being transferred to Germany and to protect customer deposits. Several high-profile UK fintechs, including Curve, ANNA and Pockit have been forced to suspend their services, leaving millions of customers and small businesses unable to process transactions or access funds.

Whilst the full impact of Wirecard’s collapse is still to emerge, there are potentially longer-term ramifications, such as the possible effect on confidence in the UK fintech scene. There are also serious questions to be asked in respect of governance and scrutiny.

HVPTechMarketView customers with access to UKHotViewsExtra (including UKHotViews Premium subscribers) can read more via "Wirecard collapse hits UK fintechs".

*NEW RESEARCH* Digital Marketplace Dashboards P02 2020-21

Dashboard imageTechMarketView’s monthly Digital Marketplace dashboards reveal £187.3m was spent through the G-Cloud and Digital Outcomes & Specialists (DOS) frameworks during the second period of the new government fiscal year 2020-21 (May 2020). This represents a fall of 19.5% compared to P1 and is flat compared to P2 2019-20.

Total G-Cloud spend for P1 2020-21 was £119.7m. This was down 22.5% on the previous month, but up 3.7% year-on-year. DOS spending, which totalled £67.6m, also fell during the month—it was down 13.6% compared to P1 and down 7.1% year-on-year.

AWS was the leading supplier on G-Cloud during the month with sales of £7.8m. In total, 36 public sector organisations recorded spend with the cloud service provider in P1, with HMRC, DVSA and DWP spending in excess of £1m. With less the half the spend of AWS, Methods was in second place led by its work with MoJ, and Capgemini was in 3rd place, largely due to its work with the Home Office.

Kainos comtinued to lead the way on the DOS framework through its work with Defra, HMCTS and HM Land Registry. Deloitte was in second place due to contracts with Home Office and DVSA, and Mastek came in 3rd through work with NHS Digital.

Although there was a significant dip in Digital Marketplace spend in P2, it follows a strong P1 and for the 2020-21 year to date, spend is up 14% compared to the same period in 2019-20. Data for June should provide us with greater insight into the impact COVID-19 disruption has had on Digital Marketplace spend.

*NEW RESEARCH* Digital Marketplace Dashboards P01 2020-21

Dashboard imagesTechMarketView’s monthly Digital Marketplace dashboards reveal £228.9m was spent through the G-Cloud and Digital Outcomes & Specialists (DOS) frameworks during the first month of the new government fiscal year 2020-21 (April 2020).

Total G-Cloud spend for P1 2020-21 was £151.7m. This was down 22% on the previous month, but that was to be expected following the typical spike in spending in the final period of each financial year. Compared to the same period last year, G-Cloud spending was up by 21%.

DOS spending followed a similar trend. It was down 13% compared to the P12 2019-20, but up an impressive 41% compared to the same period last year. In total £77.1m was spent via DOS during the period.

DXC (Entserv) was the leading supplier on G-Cloud during the month, largely due to a £6.3m transaction with the Disclosure & Barring Service. More surprisingly, Palantir Technologies was in second place due to deals with the Submarine Delivery Agency and Navy Command Headquaters in Portsmouth. These represent the biggest digital marketplace deals it has secured to date—the only other activity of any size was £1.4m with Cabinet Office in 2016. AWS came in third, largely as a result of its HMRC and DWP contracts.

Kainos was the leading DOS supplier for the period, starting 2020-21 where it left off in 2019-20. Its biggest customers during the period were Defra and HM Land Registry. Deloitte was close behind, led my deals with Home Office, MOD and DVSA. In third place was BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, almost all through its deal with the Home Office.

*UKHotViewsExtra* Digital tech from DXC transforms mental health services

Mental health and well-being is an increasingly high priority in the UK and one of the areas where we expect to see increased investment as part of the 2019 NHS Long Term Plan (see NHS Long Term Plan: what does it mean for tech?). The personalisation of healthcare – with more ‘self-service’ through digital tools and portals – and digitalisation of services such as prescribing, also feature prominently in the Plan.

DXC logo

News from DXC Technology today illustrates these trends nicely, particularly the potential for the adoption of digital services to support mental health services in the UK. North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust is using DXC’s Open Health Connect platform to enable young people to use a digital portal to self-refer to local mental health services; and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust has gone live with DXC Lorenzo Electronic Prescribing and Medication Management (ePMA), a new digital approach to prescribing and administering medicines for NHS mental health professionals. *UKHotViewsExtra* - Accelerating RPA adoption within the NHS

Blue PrismEarlier this year I interviewed NHS Robotic Process Automation (RPA) evangelist Darren Atkins – the Chief Technology Officer at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust on how automation has been gaining traction within the Health Service. (You can read the full interview here).

One of the most interesting aspects coming out of the interview was how Atkins had had the foresight to make sure the wider NHS was benefiting from his early automations, treating the NHS as a single organisation, and going on to help create a marketplace for sharing work across Trusts. This has now morphed into the NHS Digital Exchange, an “automation library” owned by the NHS and hosted by RPA software provider Blue Prism, making all the automation work done to date within East Suffolk and North Essex (and indeed elsewhere), freely available to any other healthcare organisation in the country currently utilising Blue Prism Cloud. This is now providing access to 40-plus pre-automated processes that can be downloaded and adapted to other Trusts, all designed to save time and money and avoid “wheels being reinvented”.

NHSSome 20 or so NHS Trusts have now joined this “community” of healthcare organisations sharing tried and tested automations to help accelerate and scale activity. The library of pre-built automation assets covers a broad range of processes from tackling enhanced access to services, and patient communication from admissions through to outpatient support. Automations enabling key back office support for things like recruitment, HR onboarding, and finance processing are also available. As each Trust contributes new assets into the growing library of automations, the benefit of RPA grows accordingly, helping speed things up and in turn deliver better value for money for the taxpayer.

This all sounded like such a good idea that we thought it worth a follow up conversation with some of the other NHS Trusts already making use of the common Blue Prism Cloud platform to get a better feel for how the exchange was working in practice……CLICK TO READ MORE

*UKHotViewsExtra* Accelerating NHS digital transformation during the pandemic

LNWH logoLondon North West University Hospital Trust (LNWH) was amongst the first in the UK to treat COVID-19 patients and one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. It tripled the number of critical care beds across its Northwick Park, Ealing and Central Middlesex hospitals, and at its peak was caring for hundreds of COVID-19 positive patients. TechMarketView spoke to Glenys Lawson, Digital Matron at LNWH, about the role technology has played in helping the Trust respond to the crisis.

Glenys said that one of the issues that became apparent very quickly during the pandemic was how challenging it became for patients, their families and clinicians to communicate effectively. On 14 April 2020, Sonia Patel (until the end of May 2020 joint CIO at LNWH and now CIO at NHSX) put out a call on Twitter challenging SMEs to create an alpha version of a tool within 24-48 hours that could help alleviate the situation. Public sector digital specialists Made Tech responded to the challenge and a 48-hour team hackathon later, and with some service design help from Difrent, had built a digital service that enabled hospital staff to book virtual visits for the families of patients via video call. Accelerating NHS digital transformation during the pandemic

Made Tech logoGlenys said that one of the issues that became apparent very quickly during the pandemic was how challenging it became for patients, their families and clinicians to communicate effectively. The service supports Jitsi and Whereby video conferencing  technology, utilises GovNotify for SMS messaging, and is hosted on Heroku—it has been released as open source.

The NHS Book a virtual visit app was introduced to Northwick Park Hospital about a month ago and is now available across every hospital ward in the Trust, including non-COVID-19 wards. Glenys said there have now been approximately 1,900 visits booked through the app, which has provided much needed reassurance to patients and their families. She said the app is so intuitive that little training was needed, in fact the biggest challenge was sourcing suitable covers for the iPads used for initial deployment.

Hospify logoMade Tech is not the only technology company supporting LNWH through the pandemic. Communication between staff has been improved through the adoption of Hospify’s secure messaging app (see SME Hospify ramps up secure messaging in NHS). The adoption of Microsoft Teams has also enabled the Trust to maintain the human element whilst  social distancing, keeping the information flowing and freeing up time to deal with the clinical daily issues and liaison with colleagues internally and externally (see Microsoft Teams available across the NHS).

IMMJ logoGlenys also highlighted the rollout of the electronic document management platform by IMMJ, which, with partners EDM and UKCloud, is helping the Trust move towards a paperless approach (see LNWH transforming clinical records with IMMJ). She said, in the past there has been resistance to moving away from the reassurance of physical documents, but the pandemic has acted as a catalyst for change and the number of requests from departments to have their documents held digitally is increasing rapidly.

Infinity Health logoPaper-based task management has also been digitised through the adoption of Infinity Health’s platform, which is being used to make portering and patient transfer more efficient and to coordinate the STARRS rapid response and community teams. The strong and trusted relationship LNWH has with Bluewire Technologies, which provides the Epro mini electronic patient record (EPR), was also highlighted by Glenys as being key during the crisis.

As the peak of the initial wave of COVID-19 cases continues to decline, LNWH has been able to start thinking more about the future. The speed at which health services have introduced new digital technologies in recent months has been unprecedented, but Glenys is convinced this won’t be a blip in the history of slow and cautious NHS procurement, this will be the new normal. There will be no returning to the old ways—she believes LNWH is now well placed to deliver a significant proportion of outpatient appointments virtually and linking them back into GPs.

Glenys concluded by saying that with the new technology, “the world is your oyster as long as you have the right supplier”. It’s clear that many of the Trust’s suppliers have stepped up to accelerate digital transformation during the pandemic and that LNWH wants to maintain that momentum. It is in the process of transitioning to Cerner’s EPR, but with COVID-19 acting as a digital accelerant, LNWH finds itself several months ahead of schedule in bringing the digital solution to the forefront. Things are certainly changing in the NHS.

*UKHotViewsExtra* Brit and Google Cloud accelerate London Market transformation

BritLeading commercial insurer, Brit, has announced plans to launch a new AI-based Lloyd’s syndicate in collaboration with Google Cloud. Scheduled for its London Market launch in 2021, the algorithmically driven incubator “Ki” is being backed by Brit, Fairfax and other private capital investors. The business will be a stand-alone venture, run by a dedicated team reporting to Brit’s Group CFO, Mark Allan, who will act as Executive Chair.

Ki will use AI to evaluate Lloyd’s policies and provide automatic quotes via a digital platform that can be accessed remotely by brokers, anywhere and at any time. Cover will be selected via a process using a proprietary algorithm, developed in conjunction with the Computer Science department at University College London (UCL)

Advanced analytics is shaking up the traditional insurance ecosystem and its approach to pricing. Coupled with machine learning (ML), the sophisticated use of data is starting to replace human expertise in the assessment and management of risk.
