*New Research* Opinion: UK Government digital progress

Fujitsu World Tour logoOn 28th June 2016, TechMarketView Director, Georgina O’Toole, participated in a panel debate at Fujitsu World Tour 2016 in central London. The Public Sector panel discussion was entitled “Delivering Digital Best Practice in Government”. The panel debate was led by Fujitsu’s John Newton, charged with the company’s strategy and business development in public sector, and also included Deidre Hardy, Head of Fujitsu’s Business Development Team within the company’s Digital Business, and Dr Rob Langley, CIO of Cafcass (Children & Family Court Advisory & Support Service—a Fujitsu client).

As part of her introduction to the panel debate, Georgina offered her opinion on the progress to date and the future direction for digital in Government; the role of the Government Digital Service; and the environment in which departments are likely to be operating. Here, in this PublicSectorViews research note - 'TechMarketView at Fujitsu World Tour 2016: UK Government digital progress - we provide a transcript of Georgina’s introductory speech. *New Research* EvaluAgent joins the dots between workforce and customer engagement

LogoCall centre software provider EvaluAgent is operating in a market that is adapting to the omni channel challenge, with an offering that takes a different approach to call centre optimisation through its focus on workforce engagement alongside workforce efficiency.

Technology matters, but contact centre success also relies on the people and processes employed and this is what the EvaluAgent team understands. It joins the dots between employee engagement and the impact on customer experience. It makes for a differentiated value proposition, and one that Atos for one, recognises. EvaluAgent is a part of the Atos Safe Harbour programme and signed a new two-year contract with the provider earlier in 2016.

EvaluAgent has a strong proposition in its own right but is also positioned as a good partner for BPS and HR providers. The latest in the TechMarketView series of Snapshots looking at up and coming SME providers examines its proposition and potential. Eligible subscribers can download the analysis here.

*NEW RESEARCH* TrustID validating ID’s in public and support sectors

lReading-based TrustID is the latest TechMarketView Company Snapshot looking at innovative and disruptive technology SMEs in the UK SITS market.

TrustID is of real interest as an identity validation specialist, whose software helps public and support service organisations quickly and accurately validate documents like passports, visas and driving licences for regulatory compliance.

Identity verification/validation is a hot (and consolidating) space (see GB Group acquires Idscan), as enterprises seek ways to corroborate people are who they say they are – something increasingly critical for connecting the digital and offline worlds.

TrustID operates in a well-defined space providing electronic document scanning and validation software for clients who have high numbers of staff often across multiple sites, such as in the NHS, care homes, leisure, retail and support sectors. Customers include the likes of Oxford City Council, Bernard Matthews Farms, Kings College Hospital and The Savoy hotel.

Subscribers to TechMarketView’s BusinessProcessViews research stream can read the analysis here. If you haven’t taken a subscription yet, Deborah Seth will be happy to help.

**NEW RESEARCH** Banking Software and Sector Transformation

Major banking companies in the UK are dependent on bespoke software for their core banking operations. These businesses are central to the banks’ success but are under pressure due to higher costs, increasing competition and additional regulation. We have long argued that the established banks should increase their use of third party providers of more standardised software to reduce cost and complexity and to accelerate innovation.

Following a series of meetings with software vendors and several company-specific reports, FinancialServicesViews now provides an overview of the banking software market in its latest report; “The role of Banking Software Providers in the transformation of the sector”.

This analysis discusses the issues of dependence on bespoke software and comments on the key criteria for supplier choice as the banking sector increasingly looks to the suppliers of standardised software for a wider range of core banking functionality. With the emergence of new challengers to the established banks, the inexorable move to more standardised systems and the role that the software providers can play in the implementation of innovative technologies and services, this area should continue to experience above-average growth over the medium term.

This report is available to subscribers to FinancialServicesViews, via this link. If you would like to subscribe to this research stream, please contact our Client Services team.

ICYMI: Public Sector cloud services research

In case you missed it... last week the PublicSectorViews team published two pieces of research looking at the cloud services market in the public sector.

The first report was entitled 'Cloud Adoption in Whitehall'. Five years after the UK Government published its Cloud Strategy, the report looks at the current situation in central government, summarises the original objectives, considers the progress made and asks what the future holds for adoption of as-a-service solutions within the central government departments and agencies.

The second piece of research was entitled 'Memset: Light at the end of the tunnel'. Here, the PublicSectorViews team investigates the story behind several quarters of slowing growth for Memset, makes clear the company's UK Government intentions, explains why Craig-Wood is optimistic about the coming months, and delves into some of her most ambitious plans.

Don't miss out. If you already a PublicSectorViews subscriber, you can download the research now. If you are not yet a subscriber, please contact Deb Seth to find out more.

*New Research* Cloud Adoption in Whitehall

In March 2011 the Government announced the Government Cloud Strategy as a sub strategy of the Government ICT Strategy.

More than five years on, the latest research from the TechMarketView PublicSectorViews team looks at the current situation in Whitehall. We look at the original objectives, consider the progress that has been made and ask what the future holds for adoption of as-a-service solutions within the central government departments and agencies.

What has been the impact of the G-Cloud procurement framework? Which suppliers are making their mark? What place does the Crown Hosting Service have? And is there enough impetus for cloud adoption to accelerate? Or will a myriad barriers hamper progress?

If you are a PublicSectorViews or InfrastructureViews subscriber, you can download the research – Cloud Adoption in Whitehall: Where are we now? - today. If you would like to find out how to access this research report (and much more), please contact Deb Seth, who will be more than happy to help.

*NEW RESEARCH* Japanese BPO firm OSI buys Liberata (update)

lThe takeover of Liberata UK, the long-time public sector business process services (BPS) playerby Japanese BPO provider Outsourcing Inc (OSI), came as something of a surprise (see Japanese BPO firm buys Liberata for £43m). We had been anticipating a deal, but expected one of the ‘usual suspect’ BPS providers.

The takeover means we now have, for the first time, a Japanese-owned BPO company competing in the UK public sector BPS market.

lOSI will be a new name to many in the UK SITS market, and very much an 'unusual suspect' new parent for Liberata. So who is OSI, and, why are they making this entrée in to the UK BPS market? Also, what does this mean for Liberata and their customers as part of this new group?

TechMarketView subscribers can read our analysis in the UKHotViewsExtra comment here: Japanese BPO firm OSI buys Liberata (update). If you aren’t yet a TechMarketView subscriber, and would like to learn more, contact Deb Seth who will be happy to help.

*NEW RESEARCH* Attenda: Retracing its steps to growth

attendaAttenda has been backed by Darwin Private Equity since 2011 meaning the time looks right for a possible exit this year. The application hosting firm is well placed to serve enterprises requiring business critical hosting services – an area of the infrastructure services market that is growing strongly. However, Attenda has struggled to grow its core hosting business, although the Group has received a small uplift from the Datum datacentre business it established a few years ago. Some new client wins in the first half of 2016 have helped to lift what has been a fairly static topline performance in the past two years, but the company needs to power up its revenue flow and take better advantage of fast-growing areas of the market.

This research note examines Attenda’s performance and areas of potential growth, and we look at how that might impact a possible sale in the near term.

Subscribers to either our Foundation Service or InfrastructureViews research stream can read the note here: Attenda: Retracing its steps to growth.

*New Research* UK Government: Digital leadership changes

Kevin Cunnington photoThe wires are hot with speculation over what the future holds for the Government Digital Service (GDS) after it was announced, yesterday, that Stephen Foreshew-Cain stepped down from his role as Executive Director, GDS, after only a year in position. In his place, Kevin Cunningham, formerly Director General of Business Transformation at DWP, steps into the position of Director General, GDS.

This is the first time GDS has been led by a Director General, which in the UK Civil Service is usually a Senior Civil Servant reporting directly to the Permanent Secretary of the department (in this case of the Cabinet Office).

In the latest UKHotViewsExtra from the PublicSectorViews team, Georgina O'Toole considers recent changes within the Cabinet Office and GDS and what they mean for the future of digital transformatin within Whitehall and the wider public sector. TechMarketView subscribers can read UK Government: Digital leadership changes now. If you are not yet a subscriber, please contact Deb Seth to find out more.
