Little British Battler Update: Littlefish

Littlefish logoIn the latest instalment of our series of ‘Little British Battler’ (LBB) updates, we take a look at Littlefish, the provider of managed IT support services for SMEs and mid-market companies (between 100 and 1,000 employees).

When we met with Littlefish in January (see Little British Battlers – Q1 2012), we found that its focus on managed support services, supported by an innovation in service tools, was serving it well. The company more than doubled the size of its average Managed Service contract, in the process expanding total revenues by 30% in FY11. Our view was that Littlefish was successfully adopting tactics you might expect to see from rather bigger fish.

Its FY12 drew to a close at the end of September, so the timing was perfect to catch up with Littlefish’s Sales Director, Joe McCarthy. The year proved to be a tough one but Littlefish still managed to deliver solid growth. Subscribers can read more here.

Redstor – the challenges of channelling cloud services

logoWhen we met Reading-based Redstor early in the year as part of our Little British Battler initiative (see here), they were well along the way in their move from 'direct to client' storage product resale towards channel-driven cloud services provisioning. We recently caught up with Redstor CEO Paul Evans, to understand more about the challenges of this transition. Eligible TechMarketView subscription service clients can read more here.

IBM Q3 update: making sense of software

LogoIBM’s Q3 2012 results were not inspiring but they did provide further insight into the challenges large IT system and services suppliers are facing and how IBM is tackling them. Software is a pivotal piece of its strategy, both for the direct revenue it brings and its role in pulling through services business. For all its acquisitions in high growth areas such as analytics and the cloud, IBM has portfolio of older software that is acting as drag on the software business as a whole. TechMarketView subscribers can read further analysis in IBM: software ascent slowed but importance still rising.

Little British Battler update: Featurespace

LogoIn today’s Little British Battler update we look at how Featurespace has been faring since we first met up with the team early on in the year. With its blend of real-time, adaptive, behavioural analytics, Featurespace is operating in one of the hottest technology spots in the market.

It is hard work making a name for yourself in a fast moving market, where both the vendor landscape and capabilities of the many products is fragmented, and the terminology regularly misappropriated. That’s why Featurespace has been honing its message and highlighting its points of differentiation. Its adaptive analytics applications are able to deliver meaningful information about the behaviour of individuals, into the operational business environment, in real time - enabling issues to be identified before they take place.

It is vendors like Featurespace who are playing an important role in innovating around the analytics area and extending it from an expert-user, back office function, into the front office operational environment for access by business users. Eligible TechMarketViews subscribers can see what the company has been up to, here.

logoIn the latest instalment of our series of ‘Little British Battler’ (LBB) updates, we take a look at The Logic Group (TLG), the transaction processing software and services provider, targeting the retail, mobile telecom and finance sectors (see here).

But it is diversifying, via its own IP, around value-added services, such as customer loyalty, fraud prevention and analytics.

Little British Battler Update:Sumerian

LogoWhen we met Sumerian at the start of 2012 and profiled the company in Little British Battlers – Q1 2012, we were struck by what we would describe as its ‘applied analytics’ approach, whereby its offerings were tuned to understanding and optimising operational IT with the aim of supporting business change and risk management. With virtually endless uses for analytics it is vital that providers in this space identify with a particular set of use cases, which is what Sumerian does. Nevertheless, it has not been an easy year for the vendor because a shift in market dynamics caused by economic uncertainty have forced a change its business model, with a move from long term engagements to short term projects. CEO Bryan Clark explained where the company is now and its growth plans for the future. Eligible TechMarketView subscribers can catch up with Sumerian here.

TCS ousting Capita at CRB changes everything

logoThe press has been awash with the news that Indian-HQ’d TCS was in fact the company awarded the new Disclosure and Barring Service BPS contract (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) from incumbent Capita (see Capita loses Criminal Records Bureau contract).

This is clearly a fantastic win for TCS against the UK BPS market leader, even though it is certainly not without risk. For the wider market, the award shows real intent by UK Government to diversify its IT/BPS supplier base as second/third generation deals come up for grabs (see Second generation BPS deals changing hands).

Little British Battler Update - TIW Group

logoWhen we met Little British Battler (LBB) TIW Group back in January (see here), we were impressed by how this plucky boutique document management and workflow developer is helping modernise paper-based working practices at Lloyds of London, against competition from much larger rivals.

We recently caught up with CEO David Edwards to find out whether their strategy and growth plans have panned out as hoped. Particularly interesting is the story around SaaS adoption, where TIW is now going on the opposite journey to the rest of the market, starting with SaaS and taking the product on premise. There are some lessons here for the wider market.

Little British Battler Update - Mobica

logoWe first met Mobica CEO Mike Gibbons and executive chairman Nick Stammers back In January as part of our  'Little British Battler' initiative (see here). We were particularly impressed with the way the top team ‘walked the walk’ as well as ‘talked the talk’.

We recently caught up with Mike Gibbons to find out whether their ambitious growth plans have come to fruition. Eligible TechMarketView subscription service clients can read more here.

CentraStage triples revenue in 'pivotal year'

CentraStage logoWhen we first met CentraStage in January 2012 (see Little British Battlers – Q1 2012), we were impressed by the cloud-based IT management software provider. We recently caught up with Christian Nagele, CEO, to see how things have progressed since then.

We discovered that 2011/12 has been a pivotal year for CentraStage, in which it has tripled its revenue (whilst turning in a 20% EBIDTA margin); won a string of strategically important new clients; been shortlisted for several industry awards (including BCS’ ‘Cloud Provider of the Year’ alongside the likes of BT, Autonomy and Salesforce) and, of course, been chosen as one of TechMarketView’s LBBs! Indeed, CentraStage is the very definition of a ‘Little British Battler’, punching far above its weight both in the UK and, increasingly, internationally.

We’re particularly encouraged by CentraStage’s progress in both the UK education and healthcare markets. In both these markets we see tremendous potential for an offering like CentraStage’s as public sector organisations (schools, PCTs/Clinical Commissioning Groups) with constrained budgets look for ways to manage a distributed IT environment as cheaply, yet reliably as possible. And of course, the IT environment will only become more distributed as use of tablets and smartphones grows and more people work flexibly.

For the full story, eligible TechMarketView subscribers can download our latest CompanyViews research note – CentraStage: A pivotal year – from today. If you’re not yet a subscriber please do contact Deborah Seth for more details.
