UK BPS supplier landscape: new challengers and opportunities

BPS Supplier Landscape 2011The UK business process services (BPS) market is dominated by a number of providers such as Capita, Xchanging, HP, Equiniti Group, Accenture, BT and Serco, who have earned their revenue predominantly delivering ‘lift-and-shift’ BPO to the public sector (central and local government in particular) and banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) markets. These have typically been large multi-million, and sometimes multi-billion pound contracts to take over responsibility for managing business processes at reduced cost, and then often fixing, or ‘transforming’ those activities.

However, the UK BPS supplier landscape is entering a period of change in response to new technologies and services such as platform-based BPS, and ‘the cloud’, which are introducing greater automation and accountability into the delivery process, and reducing the need for straight lift-and-shift BPO.

This has the potential to upset the status quo and provide opportunities for new players and challengers to the current market leaders. These providers have different strengths, capabilities, and delivery models, and include: global, regional and offshore-based software and IT services (SITS) providers; offshore BPO pure plays, support services and construction players, and vertical and intellectual property (IP)-led specialists.
